Athletic injuries are not uncommon, but when they occur it can feel like your whole world is crashing down. Having to sit out or be limited due to an injury can be a frustrating time and take a toll on an athlete’s mental health. I have listed 6 ways you can cope with a sports injury:

1. Accept Reality

Many athletes are in denial when they become injured and don’t acknowledge or accept the fact that they are no longer able to play. You must accept the reality of the situation in order to develop a plan to move forward

2. Set goals

By setting and monitoring goals in the recovery stage, you will stay motivated and can track your progress throughout. You must treat rehab like it is your training. Stay consistent and follow a plan.

3. Stay Positive

When we are struck with adversity, it is easy to be overwhelmed with negative thoughts and feelings. It is important to focus on keeping an optimistic mindset and control the things in your control. Remind yourself you will get through this.

4. Use Mental Training

By prioritizing your mental health, you can reduce stress and speed up the recovery process. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and visualization can help your body and mind relax in this trying time.

5. Get Support

It is important to remind yourself you are not alone. Stay connected to your coaches, teammates, and trainers. Let them know how you feel from the injury mentally, physically, and emotionally. Surround yourself with a positive and encouraging support system to get you through.

6. Process your Feelings

There may be many strong emotions that come up from an injury, especially if you use sports as an outlet. It is ok to feel what you are feeling. Recognize your emotions and process them rather than suppressing them.
